As Curator Gajanan Dudhalkar says rich cultural heritage of Maharashtra is sustained over centuries by generations of people with unique diverse and colourful ambience. Arabian sea washes its shores on one side while ranges of Sahyadri creates enchanting natural beautiful terrains. It has long history in visual art starting with cave art of Bhimbetka to cave paintings at Ajanta leading to world famous Warli paintings making Maharashtra handicrafts beyond comparison.
Saints of Maharashtra left behind literature of Abhangs, Dindi, Lavani and other folk art that make the state very proud of its cultural heritage. The craft of Lacquer Ware was introduced around the end of the 17th century later developing into different but unique styles. In textile , the state is far ahead with its chequered history with different types of material woven in variety of styles in Kolhapur, Pune, Paithan and Aurangabad. One can get idea about the tradition with a fact that art of weaving Paithani Sarees is 2000 years old.
On the banks of Krishna, Koyana, Godavari, Tapi and Vainganga civilizations and dynasties have flourished and still their marks remain in the different forms of art and culture in the state. With its multicultural growth , the state finds unique place in heritage of India.
